Researchers show different pattern. Survey of 2,778 AI researchers estimates high-level machine intelligence by 2040. Most surveys indicate 50% probability of achieving AGI between 2040 and 2061. Academic researchers have different incentives than company leaders. They value reputation over hype. Their longer timelines reflect this.

Superforecasters present third perspective. Samotsvety group estimates 28% chance of AGI by 2030. This represents significant shortening from their 2022 predictions. Professional forecasters selected for accuracy are moving timelines forward. This matters more than individual expert opinions.

Metaculus community predictions show dramatic shift. Mean estimate plummeted from 50 years to 5 years in just four years. Collective intelligence is detecting acceleration. Whether acceleration is real or perceived, market will react to perception.

Pattern emerges from data. Every group shortened estimates in recent years. AI company leaders say 2-5 years. Published researchers say around 2032. Metaculus forecasters predict 2027. Superforecasters range to 2047. Range is enormous. This tells you something critical about certainty of predictions.

Geographic differences matter. North American researchers expect AGI in 74 years on average. This contrasts sharply with company leader predictions. Culture and proximity to development affect perception. Humans closest to technology become most optimistic or most concerned, depending on their role.

One fact stands clear from all this data: AGI before 2030 is within scope of expert opinion, even if many disagree. Dismissing it as science fiction is unjustified. People who know most about technology seem to have shortest timelines. But many experts think it will take much longer.

Scenario two: AGI arrives in 2047. Twenty more years to build trust relationships. Early builders compound advantage over time. Either way, starting now beats starting later.

Most humans will build with AGI. Few will win from AGI. Difference is not capability. Difference is timing, positioning, and luck. You cannot control luck. But you can maximize surface area for luck to strike. More attempts, more variation, more exposure to random breakthrough.
