How to measure: Track median time between user signup and their first successful referral action. Track time from referral sent to referral conversion. Add these together. That is your loop cycle time. Goal is to reduce this number continuously. Methods include simplifying onboarding, automating invitation flows, and creating immediate value experiences that trigger natural sharing.

Loop Gain: The Compounding Multiplier

Loop gain tells you growth multiplier from loop mechanism. Different from K-factor because it accounts for retention and multi-generation effects. Formula: Loop gain equals 1 divided by (1 minus viral factor). If viral factor is 0.2, loop gain is 1.25. Means every 100 directly acquired users become 125 total users through viral effect.

Target varies by business model. SaaS should aim for payback under 12 months, preferably under 6. Consumer products might accept longer periods if lifetime value justifies it. Reddit understood this. They tracked daily active users creating content that ranked in search engines. They monitored which subreddits generated highest conversion from search to signup. They measured time from content creation to search visibility. These metrics directly informed product decisions about which content to promote and which communities to invest in.

Build dashboard in layers. Layer one: Core loop metrics updated daily. Layer two: Detailed diagnostics for when core metrics show problems. Layer three: Experimental metrics for testing new loop mechanisms. Most humans try to show everything on one screen. This creates cognitive overload. Clarity beats comprehensiveness.

The 80% Comprehension Rule for Metrics

Final critical insight about measurement: Small improvements compound exponentially in loops. This is why measurement matters more for loops than funnels. In funnel, 5% improvement at one stage creates 5% improvement in output. In loop, 5% improvement per cycle creates exponential gains over time.

Mathematics example: Your loop has K-factor of 0.4 and cycles monthly. You improve K-factor by 5% to 0.42. Over one year, this creates approximately 7% more users than baseline. Small. But improvement comes from testing and learning. Next month you improve another 5% to 0.44. Pattern continues. After 12 months of 5% monthly improvements, your K-factor is 0.72.
