Position-based models show more sophistication. Also called U-shaped or 40-20-40 models. They assign 40% credit to first interaction, 40% to last interaction, 20% distributed to middle touches. Logic says awareness and conversion moments matter most. This might be true. Or might be assumption humans want to believe.
Time-decay models give more credit to recent interactions. Makes sense for some products. Human researches cars for months. Recent touchpoints probably matter more than initial awareness ad. But what about enterprise software? Sales cycle is long. Early education might be critical. Time-decay model undervalues it.
Data-driven attribution is Google's current standard in GA4 and Google Ads. Algorithm distributes credit based on actual contribution rather than fixed rules. This sounds ideal until you understand what "actual contribution" means. Algorithm sees correlations. Correlations are not causation. Channel might get credit for sales that would happen anyway.
Here is what research shows - CPG multinational updated their marketing mix modeling with multi-touch attribution. Result was 12% revenue uplift and 7% improvement in return on marketing investment. This sounds impressive. But case study does not tell you what else changed. Did market conditions improve? Did competitors reduce spending? Did product quality increase? Attribution gets credit, but attribution might be observer, not cause.

Attribution model sees three different users. But it is one human making one purchase decision. Your sophisticated model cannot connect dots because dots exist in separate universes.
Fourth reason - offline interactions dominate B2B and high-value purchases. Human hears about product from colleague at conference. Discusses with team in meeting room. Evaluates based on case study someone forwarded in email. Decides based on demo sales rep gave over Zoom. Then visits website directly and converts. Attribution model sees direct traffic conversion. Assigns credit to brand or last-touch. Misses entire journey that actually drove decision.
This is dark funnel problem that Rule 37 describes. 80% of online sharing happens through dark social. WhatsApp messages. Text forwards. Private DMs. Discord servers. Slack communities. All invisible to your tracking. All potentially more influential than channels you can track.
Fifth reason - attribution theater replaces real analysis. Humans create attribution models to feel productive. They build dashboards. They generate reports. They present findings to stakeholders. But common mistakes persist - relying on single model, ignoring cross-device tracking, giving no credit to assisted conversions, setting inappropriate measurement windows.
This mirrors pattern from A/B testing mistakes. Humans test button colors while competitors test business models. They measure what is easy to measure, not what matters. Attribution becomes performance where everyone pretends insights are real.
Most important failure - models confuse correlation with causation. Channel shows up before conversion. Model assigns credit. But maybe human already decided to buy and was just looking for purchase link. Maybe organic demand drove them to search your brand. Maybe word-of-mouth created intent before any trackable touchpoint occurred.
This is why successful companies combine platform attribution with incrementality testing. Incrementality asks different question. Not "which channels touched customer?" but "which channels caused conversion that would not have happened otherwise?"
Turn off Facebook ads for two weeks. If revenue drops proportionally, ads were driving incremental sales. If revenue stays same, ads were taking credit for organic demand. This is big bet testing from Rule 67, not small optimization theater. Most humans are afraid to turn off "working" channel. So they never learn truth about what actually works.
Part 3: Better Approach
Now we discuss what you should do instead. Not theory. Practical strategy that accepts reality of game.
First - focus on in-product attribution. Track what happens inside your product. How users engage with features. Where they get stuck. When they achieve success. What correlates with retention and expansion. This data is clean. This environment you control. This measurement actually improves product.
Algorithm optimization needs data. Core conversion events need measurement. These are worth tracking because variables are limited and controlled. Outside product, in wild chaos of internet, attribution is mostly fiction. Inside product, attribution approaches truth.
Second - ask humans directly. When customer signs up, ask "How did you hear about us?" Simple. Direct. Humans worry about response rates. "Only 10% answer!" But this misunderstands statistics. Sample of 10% can represent whole if sample is random and size meets statistical requirements.
Yes, limitations exist. Humans forget. Memory is imperfect. Self-reporting has bias. But imperfect data from real humans beats perfect data about wrong thing. Your attribution model is also imperfect. But it pretends to be accurate. Survey admits uncertainty. Model hides it.
Third - calculate Word-of-Mouth Coefficient. This is sophisticated approach most humans miss. WoM Coefficient tracks rate that active users generate new users through recommendations you cannot see.
Formula is simple - New Organic Users divided by Active Users. New Organic Users are first-time users you cannot trace to any source. No paid ad. No email campaign. No UTM parameter. They arrived through direct traffic, brand search, or with no attribution data. These are your dark funnel users.
Why does this work? Humans who actively use your product talk about your product. They do so at consistent rate. If coefficient is 0.1, every weekly active user generates 0.1 new users per week through word of mouth. You cannot track individual conversations. But you can measure aggregate effect. This metric acknowledges dark funnel instead of pretending it does not exist.
Fourth - use hybrid measurement approach. Industry trend in 2025 shows movement toward combining multi-touch attribution, media mix modeling, and incrementality testing. No single method gives complete picture. But multiple imperfect methods create triangulation.
Multi-touch shows which channels customers touched. Media mix modeling shows macro-level patterns across channels over time. Incrementality testing proves which channels drive sales that would not happen organically. Together, these paint clearer picture than any single model.
Fifth - accept attribution limits and optimize differently. Most valuable growth happens where you cannot see it. Trusted recommendations in trusted contexts. You cannot track trust. But trust drives purchase decisions more than any trackable metric.
So focus on what you can control. Product quality that makes users want to recommend you. Customer experience worth sharing. Community worth joining. Documentation so good people forward it to colleagues. These generate dark funnel activity. You cannot measure it directly. But you feel it in revenue growth that exceeds what attribution models explain.
Stop wasting money on attribution software that promises impossible accuracy. Stop building dashboards that create illusion of control. Instead, invest in creating value worth discussing in spaces you cannot see.
Sixth - run elimination tests on high-attribution channels. This is big bet from Rule 67 most humans fear. Your attribution model says Facebook drives 40% of revenue. Test this claim. Turn Facebook completely off for two weeks. Not reduced. Off. Watch what happens to overall revenue.
Three outcomes are possible. Revenue drops 40% - Facebook was actually critical. Double down on it. Revenue drops 10% - Facebook was taking credit for organic demand. Reduce spend. Revenue stays same - Facebook was attribution theater. Kill it entirely and reallocate budget.
Most humans discover channels take credit for sales that would happen anyway. This is painful but valuable discovery. Painful because it means you wasted budget. Valuable because now you know truth and can optimize accordingly.
Seventh - optimize for metrics that connect to real value. Attribution models optimize for attribution, not for business outcomes. Human increases attributed conversions 20% but customer lifetime value decreases 30%. Model shows success. Business experiences failure.
Better metrics exist. Customer acquisition cost relative to lifetime value. Retention cohorts over time. Net dollar retention for existing customers. Revenue from customers who came through channels you cannot track. These metrics connect to business value, not attribution accuracy.
Eighth - understand that AI improves some problems and ignores others. Research shows AI-powered attribution helps marketers extract insights and reallocate budgets dynamically. This is true but incomplete. AI optimizes based on data it receives. If data is wrong - and much attribution data is wrong - AI optimizes toward wrong target faster than humans would.
AI cannot solve dark funnel problem. AI cannot track coffee shop conversations. AI cannot measure influence of trusted colleague's recommendation. AI makes existing attribution methods faster and more automated. It does not make them more accurate about what actually drives decisions.
